Friend Or Foe
February 19, 2017 Series: The book of James
Topic: Christian Living Scripture: James 4:1–4:5,
WHAT CAUSES CONFLICT
James 4:1 What causes fights and quarrels among you? Don’t they come from your desires that battle within you? 2 You desire but do not have, so you kill. You covet but you cannot get what you want, so you quarrel and fight. You do not have because you do not ask God. 3 When you ask, you do not receive, because you ask with wrong motives, that you may spend what you get on your pleasures.
RECOGNIZE THE BATTLE
Galatians 5:17 For the flesh desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the flesh. They are in conflict with each other, so that you do not do what you want.
Romans 7:22 For in my inner being I delight in God’s law; 23 but I see another law at work in me, waging war against the law of my mind and making me a prisoner of the law of sin at work within me
ASK FOR HELP
Deuteronomy 4:29 But if from there you seek the Lord your God, you will find him if you seek him with all your heart and with all your soul.
2 Chronicles 15:12 They entered into a covenant to seek the Lord, the God of their ancestors, with all their heart and soul.
Jeremiah 29:13 You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.
HAVE PURE MOTIVES
Micah 3:4 Then they will cry to the Lord, But He will not hear them; He will even hide His face from them at that time, Because they have been evil in their deeds.
Proverbs 15:8 “The Lord detests the sacrifice of the wicked, but the prayer of the upright pleases him.”
Proverbs 15:29 “The Lord is far from the wicked, but he hears the prayer of the righteous.”
James 4: 4 You adulterous people, don’t you know that friendship with the world means enmity against God? Therefore, anyone who chooses to be a friend of the world becomes an enemy of God. 5 Or do you think Scripture says without reason that he jealously longs for the spirit he has caused to dwell in us?
WHOSE SIDE ARE YOU ON?
Colossians 1:21 Once you were alienated from God and were enemies in your minds because of your evil behavior. 22 But now he has reconciled you by Christ’s physical body through death to present you holy in his sight, without blemish and free from accusation— 23 if you continue in your faith, established and firm, and do not move from the hope held out in the gospel.
1 John 2:15 Do not love the world or anything in the world. If anyone loves the world, love for the Father is not in them.
Revelation 2:2 “I know your works, your labor, your patience, and that you cannot bear those who are evil. And you have tested those who say they are apostles and are not, and have found them liars; 3 and you have persevered and have patience, and have labored for My name’s sake and have not become weary. 4 Nevertheless I have this against you, that you have left your first love. 5 Remember therefore from where you have fallen; repent and do the first works, or else I will come to you quickly and remove your lampstand from its place—unless you repent.
