Topic: Default Scripture: James 4:13–17, James 1:9–11, 1 Peter 1:24–25, 1 John 2:17, Psalm 103:3, Proverbs 19:21,
Nature’s first green is gold,
Her hardest hue to hold.
Her early leaf’s a flower;
But only so an hour.
Then leaf subsides to leaf.
So Eden sank to grief,
So dawn goes down to day.
Nothing gold can stay.
— Robert Frost 1923
James 4:13-14 Now listen, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we will go to this or that city, spend a year there, carry on business and make money.” 14 Why, you do not even know what will happen tomorrow. What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes.
DUST IN THE WIND
Plans Change. Proverbs 19:21 Many are the plans in a person’s heart, but it is the Lord’s purpose that prevails.
Tomorrow is uncertain
Life vanishes. Psalm 103:3 “For my days vanish like smoke”
James 1:9-11 Believers in humble circumstances ought to take pride in their high position. 10 But the rich should take pride in their humiliation—since they will pass away like a wild flower. 11 For the sun rises with scorching heat and withers the plant; its blossom falls and its beauty is destroyed. In the same way, the rich will fade away even while they go about their business.
1 PETER 1:24 For, “All people are like grass, and all their glory is like the flowers of the field; the grass withers and the flowers fall, 25 but the word of the Lord endures forever.” And this is the word that was preached to you.
BOASTING IS BAD
James 4:15-17 Instead, you ought to say, “If it is the Lord’s will, we will live and do this or that.” 16 As it is, you boast in your arrogant schemes. All such boasting is evil. 17 If anyone, then, knows the good they ought to do and doesn’t do it, it is sin for them.
1 John 2:17 And the world is passing away along with its desires, but whoever does the will of God abides forever.
